Lucille Gunn Sykes age 83 of Ashland City, Tn, passed away on Thursday July 30, 2020 in Ashland City. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Billy Sykes; daughter Paul Anne Swilley (Doug) of Nashville; daughter Meg Nichols (Bob) of Crossville; grandsons J.D.Swilley (Jame), Heath Nichols (Sarah); granddaughters Anna Margaret Groom (Adam) and Katie Kafoure (Solomon); nine great grandchildren; preceded in death by parents Noble and Pauline Gunn and siblings Anita Lewis, Ben Gunn, Pat Pitt, and James Gunn. Lucille was known by classmates as “Lucy”; by her siblings and nieces and nephews as “Cille”; and by grandchildren as “Mama Grand.” She was born on June 10, 1937, at her home on Spring Street in Ashland City, TN. She graduated as Salutatorian and yearbook editor from Ashland City Central High in 1955 and attended one year at Austin Peay State College before marrying Billy Sykes of Ashland City in July of 1956. Lucy was an avid reader, gardener, camper, hiker, fisherwoman and seamstress. She was active in church work for many years as a choir member, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, home Bible study teacher, social director and more. She was a beloved Girl Scout leader and area Day Camp director for years. She was a high school substitute teacher for years before joining the staff at Cheatham County High as the Instructional Media Center director in the library. Many people have wonderful memories of the impact she had on their lives in church, scouting and school. She was an extraordinary organizer, director, teacher, mentor, faithful friend, hard worker, and devoted Christian. Everything she did, she did with excellence. Lucille was giving and compassionate, always lending a helping hand. She loved hostessing parties in her home for friends of all ages up until the time that she became an invalid in 1984. From then on, she was not able to do anything physically, but she was known as a prayer warrior, praying for hours on end for hundreds of people. Funeral services for Lucille will be conducted on Saturday August 8, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Boyd Funeral Home with Doug Swilley and J.D. Swilley officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM until the time of services on Saturday August 8that the funeral home. Online condolences may be made by going to boydfh.com.
